Frequently Asked Questions
Breast uplift surgery is a cosmetic procedure which is undertaken to improve the shape and projection of the breasts. It is a surgical option which is commonly chosen to address the dropping of the breasts, which can occur naturally with age or after breastfeeding and pregnancy.
The way in which breast surgery is done varies and can depend on both the personal aesthetic preferences of the patient and the size of the patient’s breasts. Typically the extra skin from underneath the breasts is removed, allowing the skin to be tightened. This causes the nipple to be moved up to a higher position. It should be noted that breast uplift surgery does not significantly change the breasts in terms of size – this can only be done via a breast augmentation or reduction procedure. In some cases these procedures can be undertaken at the same time as breast uplift surgery. Most surgeons adhere to a policy of not performing breast uplift surgery on patients under the age of 18. The reason for this is that the breasts are still developing.
Breast uplift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is undergone to improve the shape and projection of the breasts. The treatment addresses female breasts which have started to drop; this is a process which happens naturally with age and can also follow pregnancy and breastfeeding. Breast uplift surgery can be accompanied by a breast enlargement procedure which increases the cup sizes.
Many women opt for breast uplift surgery to boost self-esteem. With rejuvenated breasts, many women can feel a new sense of attractiveness. Breast uplift surgery is capable of restoring a sense of body confidence in women who have had children.
Breast uplift surgery is agreed upon by the patient and the surgeon after a thorough conversation and examination process, which takes place at the Breastclinik. A second consultation can also be scheduled, allowing the patients to consider all the surgical options available, before agreeing on a surgical plan.
In the case of breast uplift surgery combined with a breast augmentation, the breast implant is inserted either behind the chest muscle or under the breast tissue, helping to give shape to the breast.
Following the operation, the surgeon may wrap the breasts in a supportive dressing, or alternatively, tape can be used for support.
Breast uplift surgery typically involves incisions being made in pre-determined locations on the breasts, before skin is removed from around the areola and/or under the breasts. The breast is tightened up and the surgeon can re-position the nipples to suit the new shape. When breast enlargement is being undergone at the same time, the surgeon inserts a breast implant.
Breast lift patients will not normally eat or drink for a six-hour window prior to the procedure. They will discuss their chosen mode of anaesthesia with an anaesthetist before entering the operating room.
There is a low incidence of complications with breast uplift surgery, but as with any surgical procedure, there are risks. One potential risk is scar tissue forming a capsule which constricts a breast implant. There is also a small possibility of highly visible scarring, pain and the need for revision surgery.
The complication of scarring may not be permanent in all cases, as some can fade over time. A small ratio of patients have experienced an alteration or loss of sensation in the nipple following breast uplift surgery. This is because of tissues dying because of changes in blood supply. It should be noted that even after breast uplift surgery has been undergone, breasts naturally fall over time.
Although it is not always necessary, some patients may be asked to stay overnight in hospital following breast uplift surgery. Daily activities can normally be resumed after two weeks, but full exercise can take several months to begin again.
It is recommended that activities are built up gently during the recovery phase. Elena will be able to provide you with specific advice pertaining to the recovery period, based on your individual condition. It is normal for a support bra, or firm dressing, to be worn for a few weeks during the healing process. This can be important in order to prevent your breasts from ‘pulling’ on the healing wounds and causing discomfort. If non-dissolvable stitches are used in the procedure, they will be removed at a later date typically – ten to 14 days after surgery.
Breast uplift surgery can affect whether breastfeeding is possible, especially if the position of the nipples has been changed as part of the procedure. The question of how suitable breastfeeding is after breast uplift surgery can be discussed with Elena as part of the consultation process.

Advice On Breast Implants
Since December 2018, many regulatory bodies around the World have issued statements regarding their own position and some have limited the distribution of other textured devices. The advice does vary from country to country because the research data available is limited and not conclusive. None have called for the precautionary removal or replacement of textured devices that are already inside patients’ breasts.
Breast implants however are not lifelong devices and in general will need removal or replacement at some point. In an effort to have more robust data about both conditions, the Breast and Cosmetic Implant register (BCIR) collects breast implant data for patients in England and Scotland. The MHRA continues to collect and analyse UK information through a reporting system. It also has links with up to date information from international public health organisations. The most recent advice from MHRA on BIA-ALCL was updated on the 4th April 2019.
