Frequently Asked Questions
Male breast reduction surgery addresses a condition known as gynecomastia, in which at least one of the male breasts are abnormally big.
Male breast reduction surgery can be used for the tightening of the male breasts which have sagged following weight loss. However, it is not normally considered a suitable procedure for men who do not have gynecomastia and simply want to decrease the size of enlarged breasts which are the result of being overweight.
The procedure is undertaken in order to restore a firmer and flatter contour to the chest region and achieves this by the removal of excess fat and/or tissue. Male breast reduction surgery can be used to treat gynecomastia – which is a condition that can be present in males of any age – in both adult and teenage men.
There are several benefits which are offered by male breast reduction surgery. Men can enjoy a new level of confidence in their appearance, and also feel a lot less self-conscious. Male breast reduction surgery can also offer the ability to perform everyday tasks, and exercise, much easier. It is a procedure which is valued for its long-term results – once the excess skin and tissue have been removed, it is gone permanently.
Gynecomastia is caused by increased oestrogen levels, which result in a hormonal imbalance. This is usually down to genetics or the use of certain medications. The condition sees the breast tissue of boys or men swell due to the hormonal imbalance, and can typically happen when an older man’s body begins to make less testosterone, or during puberty.
Gynecomastia isn’t at all uncommon among older men and adolescent boys. It is thought that over half of men over the age of 50 will experience the condition to some degree.
In many cases the exact cause of gynecomastia is unknown. Among the known possible causes are thyroid problems; obesity – which can produce more oestrogen; a disease or injury which impacts on the testicles’ ability to produce testosterone; a range of medications; kidney or liver disease; and illegal recreational and performance-enhancing drugs.
Male breast reduction surgery can be an option for men of all ages, as well as teenage boys. Typically, there are other treatment options which will be tried before surgery, such as medication including testosterone, clomiphene, danazol, tamoxifen and testosterone replacement.
Should an individual not respond to the treatments listed above, male breast reduction surgery can be considered.
There are two typical forms of male breast reduction surgery: liposuction and tissue excision.
Liposuction is a less invasive technique which requires only a small incision in the chest area – either within the armpit or along the edge of the areola. Liposuction then ‘sucks out’ excess fat and tissue using negative pressure, changing the shape of the breasts and forming a new chest contour which can improve appearance.
Tissue excision is typically able to remove more glandular tissue than is possible with liposuction and addresses the problem of sagging or stretched skin around the breasts. It is a more invasive procedure than liposuction which can typically involve larger incisions in the area around the areola.
There is a risk of complications with male breast reduction surgery, as is the case with any form of surgery. These complications include infection, loss of sensation in the areola, haematoma, nerve injury, asymmetrical features and obvious scarring.
An elastic garment can be worn following the procedure – this helps with the tissue’s healing process and minimises swelling. Patients are normally ready to return to work after one week’s rest following surgery, while it may take several more weeks before more strenuous physical activities can be resumed.
